Under the Senior Managers and Certification Regime (SMCR), anyone performing a Senior Manager Function must be approved by the regulator before taking up the role, and carries personal accountability for their area once appointed. SMF Capital was set up because these appointments differ from ordinary senior hires. The regulator assesses every candidate against its fit and proper test. Approval can take up to three months once a complete application is submitted. A candidate who struggles at approval can leave a firm with a gap in one of its most important roles.

SMF Capital covers permanent, interim and fractional appointments across the Senior Manager Functions, from Chief Executives and Chairs to compliance oversight, money laundering reporting, risk and operations roles. MEDINAH, Illinois — The Internationals completed a sensational foursomes clean sweep Friday (Saturday in Manila) to surge into a commanding 7-3 lead over the United States at the Presidents Cup. Trailing 3-2 after Thursday’s opening four-ball matches, the Internationals won all five of day two’s foursomes to open up a four-point cushion heading into the weekend at Medinah Country Club. Canadian duo Corey Conners and Nick Taylor produced one of the most notable victories, taking down world number one Scottie Scheffler and Sam Burns 1-up in a tense battle. The Canadians edged into the lead on the 12th hole when Conners drilled his second shot to six feet for Taylor to tap in a birdie. Taylor then made sure of victory on the 18th with an extraordinary approach shot from the fairway that finished just two feet from the hole for an easy par. Burns had a chance to square the match but his 17-foot birdie putt curled agonizingly around the cup as the Internationals claimed the win. Earlier, Japan’s Hideki Matsuyama and South Korea’s Im Sung-jae partnered to get the first point of the day with a 3&2 defeat of Russell Henley and Jacob Bridgeman. Former Masters champion Matsuyama rolled in a 19-foot par putt to clinch victory on the 16th. New Zealand’s Ryan Fox and Australia’s Min Woo Lee dug deep to win a nervy duel with Collin Morikawa and Windham Clark 1-up to add another Internationals point. The sweep was completed with Adam Scott and Christiaan Bezuidenhout scoring a 3&2 defeat of Justin Thomas and Cameron Young before Tom Kim and Kim Si-woo downed Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele 4&3. The win was only the third time the Internationals have swept a session since the Presidents Cup was first held in 1994. They are attempting to win the biennial team golf tournament for the first time since 1998 while the US are chasing an 11th-straight victory in the Ryder Cup-style event. “We just wanted to come out and win the session,” International captain Geoff Ogilvy said afterwards. “The guys were all in a great frame of mind, but you never imagine going five zip...but we’ve seen it in these events when you get some momentum, it inspires all the groups,” he said. “It was an incredible day for us.” US captain Brandt Snedeker paid tribute to the rivals’ performance, but insisted there was still all to play for with 20 points up for grabs over the weekend. “Hats off to the International team,” Snedeker said. “They went out there and played great and made a ton of putts. “I feel terrible for our guys -- they grinded out there and it just wasn’t meant to be. But that being said, there’s still 20 points out there. There’s still a lot of golf here left to play,” the captain added. “I’ve said it all week -- we have high-quality, high-character guys. ROGERS, Arkansas — Yuna Nishimura had a big finish to her front and back nines Friday (Saturday in Manila) for an 8-under 63 that carried her to a one-shot lead in the Walmart NW Arkansas Championship as the LPGA Tour got back to its regular schedule following the Solheim Cup. Nishimura, a six-time winner on the Japan LPGA now in her fourth year on the LPGA Tour, closed out the front nine at Pinnacle Country Club with three straight birdies. Even better was the finish, birdie-eagle for a one-shot lead over         Yu Liu. “I really went for the last putt. I wanted to make it so I kind of went aggressively and it went in, so I’m hoping it’s going to continue tomorrow,” Nishimura said. Europe once again had the upper hand among the Solheim Cup players, even if there won’t be a score to settle for two more years. Celine Boutier and Charley Hull each had a 65, while Lottie Woad had a 66. The eight players from Europe’s winning Solheim Cup team all broke par. Auston Kim and Andrea Lee had the top scores from the US team at 67. “I feel like you’re in bit of a downer because obviously the adrenaline, and then last week was a crash,” Hull said. “This week actually feels nice to come out on the golf course with not a whole load of nerves that the Solheim Cup produces.” Hull also decided to change from blonde to brunette after the Solheim Cup, and she has gone from loving it to hating it to loving it again. “I will go back to blonde hopefully just after Christmas,” she said. The tournament is one of two 54-hole events on the LPGA schedule, leaving Saturday for Nishimura or anyone else to get some separation. There were 25 players at 66 or lower, and 99 players in the 144-player field broke par.

MEDINAH, Illinois — Adam Scott was a fresh face at age 23 and getting feisty under the darkening sky in South Africa.  The Presidents Cup was tied. Ernie Els and Tiger Woods were in a tense playoff when the captains agreed to a tie, meaning the Americans would keep the cup as defending champions. “Keep playing,” Scott shouted. They ultimately agreed to share the cup. Asked for his recollections from his 2003 debut, the 46-year-old Australian smiled and said: “I think I strongly suggested that Ernie get to the 18th tee because we’re playing. I was confident they could tee off. I don’t know that they could have finished the hole.” Scott never could have imagined then that it would be the closest he ever came to playing on a winning International team in the Presidents Cup.  This week at Medinah marks his 12th consecutive appearance, tying the record held by Phil Mickelson. It’s another testament to a career built around a swing so pure it has kept Scott free of injury as he became only the second player to compete in at least 100 consecutive majors, and it has kept him relevant enough to be part of yet another Presidents Cup. It’s also one more chance, and Scott doesn’t take it for granted. “I feel like it’s a huge opportunity for me,” Scott said. “There was probably a period 10 years ago, in the middle of my career, where it was, ‘Oh, this (winning) is going to happen.’ But now there’s not many more, that’s for sure. I’ve been given another chance. It might be the last one.” The Internationals gathered for the team photo, and it was only fitting that Scott had a place next to the gold trophy, with lifelong friend and International captain Geoff Ogilvy on the other side. One is the captain who has been the model of quiet confidence. The other is the inspiration for a team that wants to win as badly as Scott does. “He’s part of the International furniture now,” Christiaan Bezuidenhout said. “All of us would love to win the cup, but it would be so much more special if we can do it while Adam is still in the team.” Scott, coming off a runner-up finish in the BMW PGA Championship last week in England, still can find plenty of happy memories from his two-plus decades being on losing teams.

James and Maxey share an agent and have been friends and workout partners since the Sixers guard broke into the league, a friendship that turned into a recruiting pitch for the NBA’s career scoring leader. “When I became a free agent and we decided to let the Lakers know that I wouldn’t be returning, he was one of the first people that was on my line, calling me,” James said of Maxey. James also was intrigued with trying to help the oft-injured Embiid win his first title. Embiid has won an NBA MVP, two scoring titles, and Olympic gold medal, but has yet to lead the Sixers out of the second round of the playoffs since Philadelphia selected him third overall in the 2014 draft. “He’s done everything in our league, and the only thing he has not done is win a championship. And I want to try to help him get that first one,” James said. “He has a city on his back. He’s been ‘The Process’ for 10 years, 12 years, however long he’s been there. But I think it’s time we even get you deeper into The Process. And I hope that I can be, kind of, that final little piece that can help him get over the hump.” The Sixers went 45-37 last season and were swept in the second round by the eventual NBA champion New York Knicks. James’ résumé is beyond compare in NBA history. NAGOYA, Japan — Chinese freestyler Zhang Zhanshuo completed his sweep of seven gold medals at the Asian Games, taking the 400-meter freestyle in 3 minutes, 41.28 seconds on the final day of swimming events. His time was just 1.30 seconds off the world record held by Lukas Martens of Germany (3:39.98). Zhang also won the 1,500, 800 and 200 free and added gold in three relays. He celebrated at poolside by sitting on the lane divider and counting the golds with his fingers. The Chinese won a record 30 gold medals — and 54 overall — during the six days of swimming at these Asian Games and surpassed the 28 gold medals they won three years ago in Hangzhou. Japan was right there in many races, winning seven gold and 37 medals overall — also better than their totals three years ago. Japan’s 17-year-old Shin Ohashi set the only world record of the games, taking the 200-meter breaststroke on Thursday in 2:04.83. Ohashi obliterated the old mark of 2:05.48 set by China’s Qin Haiyang in 2023 at the world championships in Fukuoka, Japan. China’s 13-year-old Yu Zidi was the most talked about swimmer heading into the Asian Games. She did not disappoint, winning the 200 butterfly, and the 200 and 400 individual medleys. Her time in the 200 IM was 2:06.10, just off the world mark held by Canadian Summer McIntosh (2:05.70). Yu’s times are still a bit off McIntosh’s standard in all three events. But she is a legitimate threat at next year’s world championships and the 2028 Olympics where, of course, other swim powers like Australia and United States will be present. China won gold medals in five of the seven races on Friday, just as dominant as it was all week. Zhang Yufei won the women’s 50 fly in 25.41 with teammate Wu Qingfeng taking silver. China’s Qin Haiyang took the 50 breaststroke (26.68) with Ohashi — the record-setter on Thursday — settling for bronze. Other Chinese winners were Li Bingjie in the 800 free (8:24.02), Zhang Zhanshuo in the 400 free (3:41.28), and the women’s 4x100 medley relay (3:54.55). Japan’s Kodai Nishiono won the men’s 200 backstroke (1:56.42), and Taiwan’s Wang Kuan-hung claimed the 200 fly (1:55.05).

ALEX Eala seized the top seed and a first-round bye in the 20th Asian Games women's singles tennis at the Nagoya City Higashiyama Park Tennis Center in Japan. The Philippine Tennis Association (Philta) revealed the tournament draw in a Facebook post on Friday. Coming off a shock second-round exit at the WTA 500 Singapore Open, the Filipino tennis ace will face the winner between Thailand's Patcharin Cheapchandej and Pakistan's Mahin Aftab Qureshi who clash in the first round. As the youngest competitor in the nine-man field, the promising weightlifter lifted a total of 324 kg—154 kg in the snatch and 183 kg in the clean and jerk—to secure his spot on the podium.
