Houston Commercial Boiler & Heating Tune-Up: Winter Maintenance Guide Released

Oct 23, 2026

K&R Mechanical Services has released a winter HVAC maintenance guide for Houston commercial facility managers, covering eight warning signs that heating systems, including boilers, rooftop units, and pumps, need attention before the cold season begins.

Houston, United States, October 23, 2026 /NewsNetwork/ -- K&R Mechanical Services has published a guide identifying eight signs that commercial heating systems in Houston may need attention before winter demand peaks. The resource addresses boilers, gas-fired rooftop units, and pumps, and is aimed at facility managers responsible for keeping buildings operational through the colder months.

Commercial heating equipment, particularly boilers and gas-fired units, often sits idle or barely operates through Houston’s long cooling season, which means problems can go undetected until the first cold front triggers demand, K&R Mechanical Services notes. Scheduling a pre-winter inspection, the company says, gives facility managers time to address any issues before they affect daily operations or push up energy costs.

The guide points to several recurring signs that appear before heating systems fail outright. These include new or unusual noises at startup, uneven heat distribution across the building, and short cycling or lockout behavior in boilers and rooftop units.

Unexplained increases in gas bills can also indicate that a system is losing efficiency, K&R Mechanical Services said, pointing to issues such as poor combustion settings, scaled heat exchangers, or boilers short cycling due to a controls problem.

A pre-winter tune-up from K&R Mechanical Services typically begins with burner cleaning, combustion analysis, and adjustment. From there, the process includes testing safety controls such as low-water cutoffs and flame safeguards, inspecting relief valves and venting, checking pump lubrication and seals, and verifying that control sequences and sensors are functioning as intended.

Checking heat exchangers, flue and venting systems, and freeze protection on exposed piping rounds out the process, the guide said. Addressing these items before the heating season, K&R Mechanical Services said, can reduce the likelihood of emergency breakdowns and help manage operating costs through the winter months.

“Boilers, gas-fired rooftop units, and unit heaters spend most of the year sitting idle or barely working. Meanwhile, little problems grow. Quietly. Then the first real cold front rolls through, and everything gets switched on at once, which is exactly when you find out what broke over the summer. Winter HVAC maintenance is the cheap way to find out sooner,” the company said in the guide.

K&R Mechanical Services serves commercial properties in Houston and the surrounding area, including Conroe, Galveston, and Beaumont. The company handles commercial HVAC and plumbing projects and works with equipment from manufacturers including Mitsubishi, American Standard, and Trane.

Local figure skating competition Halloween Cup goes international

For its second year, recreational figure skating competition SM Skating Halloween Cup, hosted several international participants for the first time, making the local contest into an international meet. “So this is the second year we hosted the Halloween Cup. This year, the difference is it's an international competition. The first year that we hosted it we had over 100 participants, but this year almost 180 participants,” explained Nikki Cheng, president of the Philippine Skating Union. More than 180 figure skaters from the Philippines, Mongolia, Thailand, and the United States, participated in the event, which was held from October 16 to 18 at SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City. Wearing various costumes, from Disney princesses to K-pop idols, the young skaters showcased their skating skills and fun routines. For the first, the competition also joins the Ice Skating Institute Asia (ISIAsia) Championship Series. According to the competition, the event was not just a “thrilling Halloween spectacle” but it “champions SM Active's mission to make sports accessible, nurture young talent, and inspire more Filipinos to embrace an active lifestyle”. “We feel that it is very important for its contribution to grassroots development. We see that the sport is continually growing. In this event we get to discover who are the ones that we would bring into the national developmental [program]. This is a recruitment stage for us,” Nikki shared. Check out the photos from this year's event in the gallery below: Love this content? Letran edges San Sebastian, keeps Stags winless in NCAA

MANILA, Philippines — Colegio de San Juan de Letran denied San Sebastian College-Recoletos a chance to crack into the win column, escaping with a 91-89 victory in the NCAA Season 102 men’s basketball tournament on Friday afternoon at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City. The Knights improved to 7-3 and remained atop Group B, while the Golden Stags dropped to 0-10. Unlike their first-round meeting, which Letran dominated 99-62, the Knights were forced to work much harder in the rematch. With Letran leading 86-83 and 1:04 remaining in the game, Vincent Segovia drained a fadeaway jumper and Christian Ricio followed with a layup to give San Sebastian an 87-86 edge. Aaron Buensalida immediately answered with a layup of his own with 38 seconds remaining, and Nathaniel Montecillo converted both free throws to put Letran back in front, 89-87. Niel Castro then tied the game at 89-all with a jumper with seven seconds left. But Letran head coach Allen Ricardo drew up a final play for Jimboy Estrada, who knocked down a jumper with two seconds remaining to seal the 91-89 win. “Of course, during the dying seconds of the game, you go to your go-to guy. I trusted Jimboy and he delivered,” Ricardo said. “We had lapses in the game. San Sebastian also improved its transition threes, and we became a bit lousy. So in those final seconds, we went to Jimboy.” Chad Gammad led Letran with 23 points, five rebounds, and three assists. Buensalida stepped up in the absence of veteran Kevin Santos, finishing with 21 points and six rebounds. Estrada added 14 points, while Froilan Reyes chipped in 13. Caesleyh Bacani paced San Sebastian with 24 points, while John Ynot and Segovia contributed 16 and 13 points, respectively.
