Southern Behavioral Medicine Associates founder recognized for advancing the role of psychology in pain, injury recovery, disability and return to work

Hattiesburg, Mississippi Nov 6, 2026 (Issuewire.com) - Geralyn Datz, PhD, MP, clinical and medical psychologist and founder of Southern Behavioral Medicine Associates, has been named a 2026 Work Comp Changemaker, an industry recognition honoring professionals whose leadership, innovation and influence are helping move the workers' compensation system forward.

Datz received the recognition during the ELEVATE Conference at the historic Hotel del Coronado in Coronado, California, on September 22. She was honored alongside a select group of professionals from across the workers' compensation industry.

The Changemaker Awards recognize emerging and established professionals who have demonstrated courageous leadership and innovation, measurable impact and industry-wide influence, integrity, collaboration and resilience, and a commitment to meaningful systemic improvement. Honorees are selected through a multi-stage process that includes peer nominations, individual advocacy and interviews, committee discussion, and ranked scoring.

For Datz, the recognition highlights an area of healthcare she has spent more than two decades working to advance: the often-overlooked role of psychological and behavioral factors in medical recovery.

"Mental health is not separate from physical health, and that becomes particularly clear when someone is trying to recover from an injury, chronic pain or a major disruption in their ability to work and function," Datz said. "Psychology can help us understand not simply why someone is struggling, but what may help that person move forward. I'm very honored to have that work recognized and to be included among this year's Changemakers."

Datz founded Southern Behavioral Medicine Associates (SBMA) in Hattiesburg in 2011. The specialty psychology practice serves patients and organizations across Mississippi and the surrounding region, with a focus that includes behavioral medicine, chronic pain, trauma and PTSD, psychological injury, disability, neuropsychological and psychological assessment, and return-to-work evaluation and treatment.

Her work extends well beyond the clinical setting. Datz consults with healthcare professionals, employers, insurers, attorneys, and workers' compensation stakeholders on complex issues involving mental health, recovery, function, and workplace performance.

A national speaker and educator, she has delivered more than 500 scientific and professional presentations to medical, psychological, legal, insurance and business audiences. Her work has addressed topics including chronic pain, trauma and PTSD, psychological injury, opioid risk, suicide prevention, occupational mental health, burnout, resilience, psychological safety, disability and return to work.

Datz has also authored or co-authored more than 100 publications, scientific abstracts, book chapters and other scholarly contributions. Her professional leadership has included service with the American Academy of Pain Medicine and as a past president of the Southern Pain Society.

While the Changemaker Award comes from the workers' compensation community, Datz says the underlying issues of mental health, recovery and function extend far beyond any single industry.

"Whether we are talking about an injured worker, someone living with chronic pain, an employee experiencing psychological stress, or an organization trying to support its workforce, the ultimate goal is not simply acknowledging mental health," Datz said. "It is actually teaching people how to regain confidence, have less distress, and increase their ability to function and have meaningful participation in their lives."

The 2026 Work Comp Changemaker Awards were created by the hosts of the Deconstructing Comp podcast to recognize professionals making a positive difference within the workers' compensation system and helping shape its future.

Datz continues to practice in Hattiesburg while speaking and consulting nationally on mental health, pain psychology, and workforce recovery.

Olivarez rallies past Damian, sets up title clash with Tangub in National Open

MANILA, Philippines — Eric Olivarez overcame a second-set stumble to reassert his dominance over Noel Damian, scoring a 6-2, 4-6, 6-2 victory to book his place in the finals of the Mayor Edwin Olivarez National Open Tennis Championships on Friday at the Olivarez Sports Center in Sucat. After cruising through the opening set, the top-seeded Olivarez found himself in a tougher battle as Damian raised his level and forced a tense exchange of service holds. Damian held serve in the ninth game before breaking Olivarez in the next, rallying from a 15-40 deficit by winning four straight points to snatch the second set and even the match. But the setback proved only a temporary interruption for the Western Michigan product, who regrouped and regained control in the decider. Olivarez broke Damian in the third game and steadily tightened his grip on the match, keeping his opponent on the defensive. After conceding the seventh game, Olivarez responded with a decisive burst of four straight points to build a commanding 5-2 cushion before closing out the match in the next game. Standing between Olivarez and the championship crown is Eric Jay Tangub, who secured the other finals berth with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over unranked Richard Bautista. Olivarez and Tangub will dispute the title and the top P100,000 prize when they clash at 9 a.m. Saturday in the P415,000 tournament, which features the country's leading campaigners alongside a promising crop of emerging talents. Olivarez reached the championship round after beating David Abordo, 6-4, 6-1, overpowering Marraphael Teng, 6-2, 6-3, and routing veteran Vicente Anasta, 6-1, 6-1. Tangub, meanwhile, opened his campaign with a 6-0, 6-0 demolition of Gurkan Nasilbilirsen, followed by a 6-2, 6-0 triumph over James Aquino and a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Loucas Fernandez. Olivarez is also in contention for a men's doubles championship after teaming up with Nilo Ledama to eliminate Evan Bacalso and McLeen Gomera. They will next face Al-Zayeed Baid and Elvin Geluz, who defeated Anasta and Jerome Bernales, 6-3, 6-3. In the other doubles semifinal, Damian and Brysl Libao advanced with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Austin delos Santos and Dos Gaddi. They will take on Tangub and Bautista, who survived John Benedict Aguilar and Rolly Saga, 6-3, 5-7, 10-8. Beyond the competition, the annual National Open reflects the Olivarez family's sustained commitment to strengthening Philippine tennis through consistent support for tournaments that give players opportunities to compete, improve and measure their skills against quality opposition. Sponsored by Mayor Edwin Olivarez and Rep. Eric Olivarez, the championship provides an important platform for established campaigners to maintain their competitive edge while giving emerging players the exposure and experience needed to advance their careers. Through initiatives such as this, the Olivarez family continues to contribute to the growth of the sport by helping broaden its competitive base and sustain opportunities for the country's next generation of tennis talents.
