New York City, New York Mar 9, 2023 (Issuewire.com) - Dr. Sloan is a nationally and internationally renowned neurosurgeon, physician-scientist, & noted as one of the pioneers in the immunotherapy of brain tumors. He has had an interest in neuroscience, cancer biology, and the desire to make a difference for over three decades. 

Despite his busy surgical schedule of more than 300 brain surgeries a year, he continues to be on the forefront of surgical and non-surgical treatments in neurosurgery, his expertise is in benign brain tumors, gliomas, immunotherapy, laser interstitial thermotherapy, malignant brain tumors, meningioma, minimally invasive brain surgery, spinal oncology, and tumor vaccines.

Dr. Sloan currently serves as the Chief of Neurosciences at Piedmont Healthcare in Atlanta, Georgia, where he practices as a Neurosurgical Oncologist.  He also serves as Adjunct Professor of Neurological Surgery and Pathology at the Case Comprehensive Cancer Center and the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine.   From 2007-2022, Dr. Sloan served as the Peter D. Cristal Chair in Neurosurgery at University Hospitals  & Vice Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine; Director of the Brain Tumor and Neuro-Oncology Center at the Center of Excellence for Translational Neuro-Oncology, Case Comprehensive Cancer Center; Distinguished Surgeon & Senior Staff Neurosurgeon at University Hospitals Cleveland Medical Center,  as well as Staff Neurosurgeon at UH Rainbow Babies & Children's Hospital.

Dr. Sloan has also served administratively on many local and national committees including the Chair of the  Neuroscience Clinical Guidance Council at Piedmont Health, as well as the Neuroscience Chair of the Piedmont Research Institute.  

Nationally, he has led educational and training courses on advanced neurosurgical techniques for practicing neurosurgeons and advanced trainees at both the American Association of Neurological Surgery (AANS) and the Congress of Neurosurgery (CNS).  He has also served on many national committees including the Neurosurgery Committee of the NCI-funded NRG consortium; the Panel on Musculoskeletal Imaging of the American College of Radiology; and on serves on the Medicare Evidence Development & Coverage Advisory Committee (MEDCAC) at the Center for Medicare/Medicaid Services (CMS).   At University Hospitals of Cleveland, he served as the Director of the Cord Compression Steering Committee, the Budget & Finance Committee, the Quality Committee, and on the Physician Advisory Board.  

Driven by a lifelong desire to become a physician, Dr. Sloan graduated from Yale University, with a Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, magna cum laude, and earned his MD from Harvard Medical School.   He served his internship in general surgery, and residency in neurosurgery, as well as a research fellowship at the UCLA School of Medicine. He subsequently completed a fellowship in neurosurgical oncology & skull-base neurosurgery at the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, Texas.  In 2020, Dr. Sloan earned his Master of Business Administration (with healthcare specialization) from Baldwin Wallace University. He is board-certified in neurosurgery by the American Board of Neurological Surgery (ABNS).

Active in local and national organizations, Dr. Sloan is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, A fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS), the American College of Surgeons Oncology Group, the American Academy of Neurosurgery, the AANS/CNS Spine Section, the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the Society of Neuro-Oncology, the American Society for Therapeutic Radiation Oncology, the American Association for Cancer Research, the Georgia Neurosurgical Society, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, the International Society for Biological Therapy of Cancer, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Ohio State Medical Association, and the Ohio State Neurosurgical Society (of which he is Chair Emeritus).

As a recognized leader in neurosurgery, he has served on the FDA Committee for Drugs and Devices, as well as numerous committees of the American Association of Neurosurgery including the AANS Founder's Club, the Scientific Program Committee, the Coding & Reimbursement Committee, the Executive Council for Drugs and Devices Committee, as well as a mentor of the Resident Mentoring Program.

Among his other activities, Dr. Sloan has served as a member or moderator of the Annual Scientific Meeting at AANS/CNS Joint Sections on Tumors;  the Appropriateness Criteria Committee of the American College of Radiology; the Skeletal Metastasis Guidelines at the American College of Radiology; the Atlanta Chapter of the American College of Surgeons; the Bone Metastasis Panel of the American Radium Society; the Editorial Board of Operative Neurosurgery; a Founding member of the Glioma Longitudinal Analysis (GLASS) Consortium; the Ezekiel Hershey Council at Harvard Medical School; the Catalyst Council of the New England Journal of Medicine; the Neurosurgical and Brain Tumor Committees of the Radiation Therapy Oncology Group (RTOG); a Founding member of the Society for Melanoma Research; and a mentor of the Young Investigator Committee of the Society for Neuro-Oncology.

The Internationals took a 10.5-7.5 edge into Sunday’s 12 concluding singles golf matches at Medinah, leading on US soil for the first time after pairs matches. Australian Min Woo Lee and British Open champion Ryan Fox of New Zealand rallied to beat US Open champion Wyndham Clark and Sam Burns 3&2 while Canada’s Conners and Nick Taylor, three down after 10 holes, shocked Jacob Bridgeman and Russell Henley 1-up. “No giving up. We knew it was going to be a battle,” Conners said. “We gave them a few holes early on, did a good job of just staying with them. It feels good to get it done.” The Internationals swept Friday’s foursomes matches to grab a four-point lead and they clung to the edge even though the Americans went 4-3-1 in Saturday’s matches. “Our guys battled hard. It was a tough day. I was proud of the way they hung in there,” US captain Brandt Snedeker said. “Stay the course. It’s going to be a long hard day tomorrow.” Internationals captain Geoff Ogilvy of Australia was overjoyed at the fightback foursomes split. “Amazing. LOS ANGELES — The Golden State Warriors have extended their long-term deal with superstar Stephen Curry for two more years in a deal worth a reported $116 million, the basketball franchise announced. "A true legend of the Bay, here to stay. The Golden State Warriors have signed four-time NBA champion and two-time NBA Most Valuable Player Stephen Curry to a contract extension," the California franchise said on its X account. Sports broadcaster ESPN reported that the Warriors point guard had signed a new two-year contract, with an option for an additional year, worth $116 million. Curry, 38, holds a number of records, including the NBA's all-time record for three-pointers. The player famous for constantly chewing his mouthguard will begin his 18th season at the highest level of world basketball in late October, having spent his entire career with the same team. SINGAPORE — Leylah Fernandez reached her first WTA final of the year after the Canadian recovered from a poor start to beat Poland's Maja Chwalinska in the Singapore Tennis Open on Saturday night. The sixth seed dropped the first five games of the semifinal against her fifth-seeded opponent but came back strongly to win 1-6, 6-4, 6-2 to set up a final against unseeded Australian Talia Gibson on Sunday. Gibson advanced to her first WTA final after her semifinal opponent Tatiana Prozorova was forced to withdraw from the tournament due to the WTA's concussion protocol. Fernandez was broken in all four of her service games in the opening set by fellow left-hander Chwalinska. Galvanized by vocal support, the Canadian raised her game in the second set and earned a crucial break to take a 5-4 lead before holding serve to level the match. The world number 31 then broke Chwalinska twice, and set up match point with an ace before firing a powerful backhand down the line to secure victory in two hours and eight minutes. It will be Fernandez's first WTA final since she won last year's Japan Open. The unseeded Prozorova stunned third seed Alexandrea Eala in the round of 16 on Thursday and then beat China's Wang Xinyu in a gruelling three-set quarterfinal the next day. However, the Russian was struck in the face by the ball while playing in the doubles quarterfinals later on Friday. Prozorova had to withdraw from that match and then had to sit out the singles semifinal after the WTA physiotherapist diagnosed her with concussion. The WTA said players diagnosed with concussion cannot compete until they complete a graduated return-to-play protocol and receive medical clearance.
