Creamline guns for third straight win

Oct 23, 2026

DEFENDING champion Creamline aims to extend its winning streak to three when it battles winless ZUS Coffee in the 2026-27 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) All-Filipino Conference Siklab Series on Saturday at the Filoil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City. Creamline (2-0) and ZUS (0-2) banner the triple-header at 6 p.m. PLDT High Speed Hitters (0-2) and Capital 1 Solar Spikers (2-1) clash at 1 p.m. while VNS Laticrete Griffins (0-2) and Clearskiiin UV Smashers (2-0) collide at 3 p.m. The Cool Smashers started the tournament on a high note with victories over Akari and Galeries Tower. The Sherwin Meneses-mentored squad is led by veterans Alyssa Valdez, Jema Galanza, Tots Carlos, Jeanette Panaga, and Bernadeth Pons who are all healthy to start the tournament. In a win over Galeries Tower, Carlos led the scoring for Creamline with 13 points, while Jema Galanza made a triple-double performance of 12 points, 12 excellent digs, and 11 excellent receptions. Decorated setter Jia de Guzman made 16 excellent sets and chipped in five points for the Cool Smashers, also allowing  Bea de Leon and Bernadeth Pons to score eight points each.  ZUS, on the other hand, is still looking for its first win, but the Thunderbelles recently pushed the Bella Belen-led Capital 1 Solar Spikers into a five-set thriller. In that loss, AC Miner, Zam Nolasco, Jolina dela Cruz, Riza Nogales and Chinnie Arroyo tried to rally the team but fell short. If ZUS wants to prevail over Creamline, veterans Jov Gonzaga and Rachel Daquis need to step up and provide leadership for the team. NICOLE ANNE BUGAUISAN

Salary cap debate intensifies ahead of World Series

MILWAUKEE — On the eve of the World Series, there is a realization these may be Major League Baseball’s last games for a while. Owners are pushing for a salary cap, and that could prompt a lockout starting Dec. 2 and result in canceled games in 2027. “It would be a real bummer to lose a season, that’s for sure,” Tampa Bay ace Drew Rasmussen said Thursday (Friday in Manila) ahead of the World Series opener against Milwaukee. “I think the industry as a whole is in way too good of a place.” This year’s World Series is the first since 1991 between teams both in the bottom half of payrolls: Milwaukee ranked 19th as of Aug. 31 and Tampa Bay 25th. MLB says a cap is needed to help all teams compete more consistently, but players contend because of the method owners use to define expenses, a cap would lead to management taking a greater share of the sport’s revenue. “The system that’s being proposed, which is similar to other leagues in terms of revenue-sharing system, not only will help us compete, but more importantly all of the teams with lower payrolls, too, which is something also I think the fans want,” Brewers owner Mark Attanasio said. MLB’s proposal would cap spending in 2027 at $245.3 million using figures for luxury tax payrolls, and limit a player to 15 percent of a team’s payroll. Free agents would be capped at $265 million over six seasons — far under Juan Soto’s record $765 million, 15-year deal with the New York Mets. The players’ association vows never to accept a cap. “If they’re going to sit there and wave their little magic wand at us saying they’re going to get a salary cap, it’s not going to happen,” Brewers pitcher Trevor Megill said. Negotiations for a collective bargaining agreement to replace the five-year deal expiring Dec. 1 could turn into each side trying to outlast the other. “My thought with it all is keep building on the former generations and build on what they gave us,” said Brewers ace Jacob Misiorowski, who throws the first pitch of the Series on Friday night. “You don’t want to be the generation to send something backwards. You just keep building on what former generations have given you and hope for the best.” Attanasio said the Brewers ranked 11th in nonplayer baseball operations spending this year and the Rays were ninth. The owner said about 250 people report to general manager Matt Arnold. Milwaukee is ranked 30th and last in market size in MLB and could become the first small-market team to win the title since the 2015 Kansas City Royals. “We have to keep an eye on the present and one eye on the future in every move that we make. Every trade we have to think about that,” Arnold said. “There are tradeoffs for what you can do to help the team today and what that looks like going forward.” Tampa Bay is the No. 15 MLB market. While the Rays haven’t spent lavishly on major league payroll, they were among the bigger spenders on player development this year. The players’ association filed a grievance against the Rays alleging the team didn’t meet its obligation under the labor contract to use revenue-sharing proceeds to try to improve its performance on the field. The grievance, covering 2017, ‘18 and ‘19, was withdrawn in December. In a bargaining session Thursday, owners proposed to allow the use of cameras on catchers for broadcasts. AP

Williams, Santos lead Bears over Patriots

LOS ANGELES — Caleb Williams threw two touchdowns and finished with 308 passing yards as the Chicago Bears finally edged clear of the New England Patriots to clinch a 30-24 victory at Soldier Field on Thursday (Friday in Manila). The Bears — playing their first home game since the passing of legendary former coach Mike Ditka earlier this month — improved to 5-2 thanks to a composed display from Williams, who made 22-of-33 passes with no interceptions. Chicago were also grateful for a career-long 58-yard field goal from veteran kicker Cairo Santos in the final two minutes that gave Chicago a nine-point lead and effectively settled the game. “It felt great being able to be back with the guys, being able to be back out here in front of our fans,” said Williams, playing his first home game since a monthlong injury layoff. Earlier, the Bears defense dominated the early exchanges, winning a turnover on downs on the opening New England drive before forcing the visitors to punt twice. Chicago got on the board early with a 43-yard Santos field goal before D’Andre Swift rushed over for a close-range touchdown late in the first quarter to make it 10-0. New England however got back into the game early in the second quarter, with an inspired weaving run from quarterback Drake Maye to cap a 74-yard touchdown drive. Initially it looked as if Maye had been stopped just short of the goal-line, but New England challenged the call and replays showed he had just managed to break the plane as he stretched for the end zone. Chicago restored their double-digit advantage with 10 unanswered points through Santos’ second field goal and a Luther Burden touchdown to make it 20-7. Yet once again New England hit back and on the stroke of half-time, conjured a touchdown out of nothing when Maye connected with Rhamondre Stevenson for a 48-yard score that caught the Bears secondary napping. The back-and-forth scoring continued in the third quarter, with Colton Loveland collecting a 12-yard pass from Williams to put the Bears 27-14 ahead, only for Maye to toss his second touchdown to set up a score for Eli Raridon and make it a six-point game at 27-21. Chicago flirted with disaster in the final two minutes, when Williams was sacked on third down to leave Santos with a long-range field goal attempt. Santos though drilled the kick to put the Bears out of reach, with New England’s final points coming from an Andy Borregales field goal. The Patriots, runners-up in last year’s Super Bowl, fell to 4-3 with the loss. AFP

Comparing Villegas to Saldaña

Oct 23, 2026

NOT many coaches is willing to take the risk on a player who has been sidelined by multiple knee operations, but coach Yeng Guiao and the Rain or Shine Elasto Painters are more than willing to make that gamble on Luis Villegas. Villegas, a 6-foot-7 product of University of the East, was the team’s third overall pick in 2023 and the Elasto Painters patiently waited for him to recuperate. Back then, he was expected to return after being sidelined for months following an ACL injury he suffered while playing for the Red Warriors yet Rain or Shine waited longer than expected.  “When we drafted Luis Villegas, we thought he was well on his way to recovery. We knew there was a risk, but we expected him to come back sooner. Instead, he would try to play and have a problem again,” said Guiao. Of course, management was having apprehensions which was normal. You don’t want to pay for something that is feared to be damaged goods, but Guiao and the bosses of Rain or Shine were patient enough to see Villegas recover and get better. “We kept waiting, and eventually we had to seek a second opinion. The assessment was that he needed another reconstruction,” added Guiao. Suffering serious injuries could take a toll on a player, not just physically, but psychologically. “Every operation carries a risk. You cannot be sure you will bring the player back to a hundred percent, especially when you are operating on something that has already been repaired,” said Guiao. “You put your judgment on the line. You trust the process, but you also have to be ready — that it might not work.” But Villegas was determined to come back and play and such traits embraced one of the philosophies of Guiao and now the player has been a key contributor so far since he returned to competitive form. Villegas’ character reminded Guiao of one of his toughest players ever — the late great Terry Saldaña. Much like Villegas, the player known as “The Plastic Man” was riddled with a series of career-threatening injuries, one of those scary incidents took place when Saldaña was still playing for the PBA’s most popular team, Ginebra San Miguel, coached then by The Living Legend Robert Jaworski in 1987. But Guiao, then a neophyte coach in the PBA, took a gamble on Saldaña and made him a part of his Pop Cola Sizzlers’ team, one of two expansion squads which joined the PBA along with Pepsi, in 1990.         “I remember Terry Saldaña. Both knees had been operated on, and I think one of them had been operated on twice. When he came back, he was playing like his old self. He became part of our championship team at a time when the game was very physical,” said Guiao.   “I don’t know how much of that was his body. Terry had an exceptional body. Maybe he was also mentally strong enough to handle what he had gone through. Maybe it was the combination of both.” The gamble paid off, but Guiao also had apprehensions whether bringing in someone who was then considered damaged goods, could either work for them or turned out to be a disastrous move. “We didn’t know for sure he could still play when we took him. It was really a big gamble. You knew his ability and his potential, but you still had to find out whether he could get back there,” added Guiao. Guiao was able to coach different breed of high-character athletes in Villegas and Saldaña and the veteran mentor is hoping their investment could pay off someday. For now, Villegas and the Elasto Painters are in solid hunt to make another deep run in the PBA’s season-ending conference.

76ers erase 29-point deficit to defeat Cavs

LOS ANGELES — The Philadelphia 76ers erased a 29-point deficit to stun the Cleveland Cavaliers, 114-106, on Thursday (Friday in Manila) in NBA superstar LeBron James’ first home game since landing in Philly as a free agent. Tyrese Maxey scored 32 points and Joel Embiid added 24 — including a jump shot with 6:54 left to play that gave the Sixers their first lead of the night — one they wouldn’t relinquish on the way to an epic comeback. Former Celtics star Jaylen Brown, the Sixers’ other big off-season acquisition, scored 21 points and pulled down eight rebounds and four-time NBA champion James added 17 points, 10 rebounds and five assists to help the 76ers author their biggest comeback of the play-by-play era that started in 1996. It was also the biggest comeback of James’ storied career. The league’s all-time leading scorer called it a good win — but not a position he wants to be in often. “You don’t want to rely on that,” he said. “I think it’s great to know (that) deep down we’re not going to have that quit mentality. You never want to look around and say guys gave up. “But you don’t want to put yourself in too many of those situations.” Cleveland, disappointed not to land hometown hero James after he announced he was leaving the Los Angeles Lakers after eight seasons, appeared to be on a mission to show him what he missed. Donovan Mitchell scored 22 of his 32 points in the first half as the Cavs seized control against a 76ers team struggling to find a rhythm and protect the ball. Philadelphia center Joel Embiid looked creaky, and James had five of the Sixers’ 15 first-half turnovers — which led to 22 Cavs points and provoked boos from Philly fans whose hopes of a title run have been raised by the arrivals of James and Brown. The boos turned to raucous cheers as the reenergized 76ers opened the third quarter on an 11-0 run. They cut the lead to single digits on back-to-back baskets from Maxey that pulled them within 80-73. The Cavs were struggling to regroup. Maxey reduced the deficit to two points with a running finger roll layup with 2:33 left in the third before Cleveland reeled off six straight points to take a 90-82 lead into the fourth quarter. But the 76ers, who beat the reigning champion New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday, kept coming. They outscored the Cavaliers, 60-37, in the second half, clamping down defensively and giving up just two turnovers. Evan Mobley scored 18 points for Cleveland but had just three in the second half. Jarrett Allen scored 14 but was held scoreless after the break. “We stayed together, that’s the main thing,” Sixers guard VJ Edgecombe said. “When it got worse we could have given up, we didn’t. It’s an early season test, early season adversity, and we overcame it.” AFP

Blanchet takes lead in Bermuda

SOUTHAMPTON, Bermuda — Chandler Blanchet made a pair of eagles, one from 50 feet and the other from 5 feet, to post his best score of the year — a 9-under 62 — and hold a one-shot lead after the first round of the Butterfield Bermuda Championship. Blanchet, whose best finish this season was on another island in the Puerto Rico Open, added six birdies to his round. His only dropped shot came on the par-4 fourth, his 13th hole of the round, when he missed the green well to the left at Port Royal. He led by one shot over Ben Kohles, Corey Conners, Danny Walker and Ben Silverman of Canada on a day when the wind was all over the place, from gusty to calm with a few passing showers. Blanchet is at No. 114 in the FedEx Cup Fall, and points are all that matter this time of the year for so many players. Bermuda is one of five tournaments left in the season, and the top 100 keep full status for 2027. An example of the wind not hurting as much as it often does at Port Royal came on the par-5 seventh hole as Blanchet was finishing his round. “The wind was kind of calming down, so it was pretty favorable,” he said. “Hit a smooth 5-iron there to like 5 feet. That was sweet.” His other eagle came on the 17th, the shortest par 5 but with water lurking to the left. “Yeah. No. 17, I guess that was my last eagle. I hit a great drive,” Blanchet said. He only had about 180 yards in, but left it out far too the right, only to hole the putt from just outside 50 feet. “Just dripped in on the last revolution,” he said. Kohles had a chance to sew up his PGA Tour card at No. 19 going into the Korn Ferry Tour Championship (the top 20 earn cards). But he was playing well enough that he went to the Baycurrent Classic in Japan and tied for 17th. Now he’s at No. 80, virtually a lock for a card, and now can think about finishing in the top 60 to get into two $20 million signature events. Kohles made a career-best six straight birdies, all of them in the 6-foot range until the last one, which was about 12 feet. “It’s pretty nice I think to feel a lot more comfortable,” Kohles said. “Going into the fall it was funny. I obviously decided to play the fall out here and skip the last three Korn Ferrys, and as good as I played on both tours I wasn’t really locked on either one. So, it was really nice to have those three good finishes to start the fall and pretty much secure my top 100 for next year. “Just feel like I’m just kind of freewheeling and trying to play my best and see where it puts me.” Mackenzie Hughes and Emiliano Grillo were in the large group of players who shot 64 to wind up two shots back after the first round. Without the consistently blustery wind, the course played to an average score of 68.5. “The conditions were amazing,” said Conners, who at No. 61, is the highest-ranked player in the field. “The wind blows pretty hard here and it was fairly mild today. The golf course is playing great, it’s in wonderful shape and was really a nice day. A little bit wet early, but for the most part we got really lucky with some pretty pleasant conditions to play in.” AP
