Mar 23, 2019

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Nacho Elvira took a big step towards clinching a first European Tour title after he fired a 6-under-par 66 for a two-shot advantage over David Lipsky after the third round at the Maybank Championship on Saturday. Elvira has been on song since the opening round where he joint-led the standings, and the Spaniard maintained that consistency with seven birdies to reach 13-under in sweltering conditions at the Saujana Golf & Country Club. Australia's Scott Hend, Maximilian Kieffer of Germany and Thailand's Jazz Janewattananond are in a tie for third at 10-under, with Ernie Els a further...

In China, Apple's Cook says he's bullish on global economy

Mar 23, 2019

BEIJING — Apple CEO Tim Cook said Saturday that he is "extremely bullish" about the global economy based on the amount of innovation underway, and urged China to continue to "open up" amid complaints from the U.S. and others that it is shutting foreign firms out of key high-tech industries. In a speech at an economic forum in Beijing, Cook said Apple is less concerned with the short-term economic outlook because the tech giant makes investments looking ahead years or decades. "In the long term, I'm extremely bullish. I think the key to the economy, unlocking its potential has always...

Just 26 of those confirmed dead in Thursday's explosion have been identified, it said. The blast in an industrial park in the city of Yancheng, north of Shanghai, was one of China's worst industrial accidents in recent years. State-run television showed crushed...

Exiled Thai leader is father of the bride ahead of election

Mar 23, 2019

HONG KONG — Thailand's exiled former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra won't know until Sunday whether people in his homeland are still fans of his politics, but he was happy as he hosted a wedding reception in Hong Kong for his youngest daughter. Though ostensibly a family affair with a raft of VIP guests, the timing of Friday ceremony two days ahead of Thailand's first general election since a 2014 military coup seemed to carry an implicit message to Thaksin's countrymen: Don't forget me and my political allies when you go out to vote. Thai Princess Ubolratana Mahidol, who made an...

Indonesian airline wants to cancel Boeing order after crash

Mar 23, 2019

JAKARTA, Indonesia — In a blow for Boeing, Indonesia's flag carrier is seeking the cancellation of a multibillion dollar order for 49 of the manufacturer's 737 Max 8 jets, citing a loss of confidence after two crashes within five months. It is the first announcement of a cancellation since Boeing's new model aircraft were grounded following fatal crashes in Indonesia and Ethiopia. PT Garuda Indonesia, which had ordered 50 Max 8 jets in 2014 and had received just one plane last year, sent a letter to Boeing last week requesting to cancel the order worth $4.9 billion, company spokesman Ikhsan...
